Researchers plan to study the calls of North Atlantic right whales in hopes of saving their species. At least four of these whales have died in the last year from collisions with ships, leaving only about 350, according to scientists. Scientist Christopher Clark from the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and others will listen to over 1,400 hours of digital recordings that have been made off the coast of Brunswick, Georgia. The sound recordings will determine whether the calls are loud enough that a sophisticated satellite system would benefit their research. With the satellite system, scientists could track the whales and send out alerts if any are in danger. Listen to whale calls on the Cornell Laboratory website.
